How to pick a good whiskey — a beginner's guide

2026-04-24By Vino Corner1 min read

Many people want to try whiskey but don't know where to start. For a first taste, soft and balanced bottles are the better call.

Where a beginner starts

Newcomers usually do well with:

  • Irish whiskey
  • a mild Scotch blend
  • bourbon with vanilla notes
  • light Japanese styles

Don't reach for very smoky or very expensive bottles right away. First figure out which style you actually enjoy.

How to drink it

You can drink whiskey:

  • neat
  • with a couple of ice cubes
  • with a splash of water
  • in cocktails

A solid first bottle

A solid start: a mid-priced bottle from a well-known brand.
