How to store red wine properly
Storing red wine properly preserves its flavor, aroma, and structure. Even a good bottle can spoil under the wrong conditions.
Temperature
The sweet spot is 12–16°C for most red wines.
Avoid:
- heat
- sharp temperature swings
- storing next to a radiator
Light
Sunlight is bad for wine. Better to keep bottles:
- in a cabinet
- in a wine fridge
- in a dim place
Bottle position
If the cork is natural — store horizontally. This keeps the cork moist.
Humidity
Moderate humidity is ideal so the cork doesn't dry out.
After opening
Once opened, finish a red within 2–5 days.
Use:
- a vacuum stopper
- the fridge
Storage mistakes
- the kitchen next to the stove
- a windowsill
- the balcony
- shaking the bottle frequently
Bottom line
The best place to store red wine is cool, dark, and stable in temperature.
